THE STRAND

This project involved working with a client who wanted a light touch to an old building.

The front of the building was renovated to enhance the features that form a terrace on Topsham's grandest avenue.

This new extension expresses the structure and uses steel as a modern, efficient way to support masonry.

Material and light are used to great effect to enhance a small space that was dark and cramped.

Oak floor boards and joinery combine with the slate of the courtyard to give an inside/outside feel to this area.

The glass box allows light to flood in and because it has no joints or rafters it reinforces the outside on the inside feeling.

The clients vision was to be bold and brave whilst enhancing what was there. The house retains it's period feel throughout except in this area where adventure meets structure.

We feel this project illustrates just what can be done to a listed building in a conservation area.

Even the cat likes this space!

The structural steel work is protected with intumescent paint.

The island unit houses a gas hob, electric oven, sink, fridge, drawers and further storage spaces.

CLIENT REMARKS

The brief was to renovate a Grade I listed house sited within a high profile conservation area whilst adding to the living space in a contemporary way - creating excitement from the juxtaposition of old and new.

PDM Design succeeded.

The ideas incorporated into the design, the use of materials and light have a huge impact on anyone entering the building - and they were able to retain the atmosphere of my home. I would always recommend Philip for adventurous and sensitive projects.

What I hadn't appreciated before we started was how invaluable Philip would be in his astute and professional management of the building team, our neighbours, the suppliers and the local authorities - not to mention the customer! I look forward to the possibility of working with them again.
